Lime mortar today is primarily used in the conservation of existing old buildings or the recreation of new ones using traditional methods. However, the soft and porous properties of lime mortar provide certain advantages when working with softer building materials such as natural stone and terracotta.

It is made principally of lime (hydraulic, or non hydraulic), water and an aggregate such as sand.

Lime can be used as the binder in mortars for building, pointing, rendering, plastering and flooring, as well as in grouting and lime concrete. Lime mortar is eminently compatible with traditional building materials and has good water vapour permeability, unlike cement mortars.

Lime-based mortars are relatively flexible under stress and have limited autogenous healing properties, due to slight dissolution and redeposition of lime overtime, which can fill minute hairline cracks.
